Hard drive upgrade

Physically installing a drive in the Xbox is simple — it uses a regular 3.5″ IDE (PATA) drive. The only part that requires some consideration is how you’re going to prepare the drive and then get the Xbox operating system installed on it.

I followed the method outlined in this tutorial at Xbox-Scene. In short, it went like this:

  1. Make an EvolutionX bootable DVD, which starts up an FTP server on the Xbox.
  2. FTP the contents of the C and E drives to a computer.
  3. Shut down Xbox, install new hard drive. It doesn’t matter what state the drive is in, it doesn’t have to be prepared.
  4. Boot again with the EvoX DVD and connect with an FTP client.
  5. Issue the following raw FTP command with your FTP client (look around in your client’s menus if you don’t know where it is): Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1. This will echo back an alphanumeric key. Use this key for the next command: FormatDrive key.
  6. Repeat steps five for Partition2 and Partition6. The rest of the partitions will be created automatically.
  7. FTP the backed-up C and E contents on your computer back to the Xbox. You’re good to go.
