Hard drive upgrade
Physically installing a drive in the Xbox is simple — it uses a regular 3.5″ IDE (PATA) drive. The only part that requires some consideration is how you’re going to prepare the drive and then get the Xbox operating system installed on it.
I followed the method outlined in this tutorial at Xbox-Scene. In short, it went like this:
- Make an EvolutionX bootable DVD, which starts up an FTP server on the Xbox.
- FTP the contents of the C and E drives to a computer.
- Shut down Xbox, install new hard drive. It doesn’t matter what state the drive is in, it doesn’t have to be prepared.
- Boot again with the EvoX DVD and connect with an FTP client.
- Issue the following raw FTP command with your FTP client (look around in your client’s menus if you don’t know where it is): Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1. This will echo back an alphanumeric key. Use this key for the next command: FormatDrive key.
- Repeat steps five for Partition2 and Partition6. The rest of the partitions will be created automatically.
- FTP the backed-up C and E contents on your computer back to the Xbox. You’re good to go.
