Workstations
Here’s some pictures of my workstation over time. Most recent shots are on top.

I bought a new iMac a couple months ago and rearranged a little bit. Also got a new MacBook Pro from work to replace the ancient PowerBook.
Aluminum iMac: 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa), 3GB RAM, 250GB hard drive
MacBook Pro: 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 100GB hard drive

Well, I finally got around to building my own desk. The design went through several iterations, but I finally settled on a fairly simple idea of some white pine boards on a supporting frame held up by steel legs. All I really wanted was a large, flat work surface — it’s 6 feet long and 29 inches deep. I’m quite happy with it. As you can see, it has plenty of space:
Some people might wonder why I replaced the old desk (see the pictures below) with this one, since most people like that L-shaped desk. Well, although it looks OK in the pictures, it was really on its last legs. It was a $50 Staples desk that I had for more than 3 years, and it got moved at least three times, and it was just getting wobbly and bowed and beat up. Also, since Amanda is moving in soon, she will be sharing the office, as will two 6-foot bookshelves and a couch and my digital piano, so an L-shaped desk wasn’t really practical anymore. The new desk is significantly deeper than the old one too, so I have much more usable space and it feels less cramped. Plus, I’ve always wanted the satisfaction of building my own work space.

Several updates here!
- Most notably, the Dell 700m has been sold off and replaced with a black MacBook! 2.0GHz Core Duo, currently 1GB of RAM (going to 2GB soon), 80GB hard drive, dual-layer DVD burner. VERY nice machine, got a great deal on it…and now I am completely Mac (except for the server of course, that’s Linux).
- Added gigabit ethernet. MUCH faster than the old 10/100. Also, I moved all the networking stuff (router, switch, etc), my USB hub, and all my charge/sync cables to the keyboard tray that I don’t use; you can see it under where the MacBook is placed on the desk. That cleaned up a lot of cable clutter on the desk.
- Sold the Logitech S530 set and got an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and Logitech VX Revolution mouse.
Coming soon…a new custom built desk!
January 2007
A slight update; got a few new toys in the last couple weeks…
1. Logitech Z-2200 2.1 speaker system (replaced Z-5500 5.1 set that I never used in 5.1 mode)
2. Apple iPod nano 8GB, black (replaced 30GB iPod video that I never watched videos on)
3. Motorola RIZR Z3 slide-style phone (replaced BlackBerry 8700c…no point in paying for mobile email if I’m always at a desk, is there?)

To start off the new year, I’ve moved! A place called Timber Edge Estates, really nice apartments, we’ll be staying here until Amanda gets out of school. Here’s my setup in the new office:
