Even GAIM/Pidgeon isn't even in the ring to compete, and Adium uses the libpurple/libgaim libraries that they produce. Then again, no other operating system has Cocoa to work with :) If any program showcases the best features of the OS, Adium does it. I just wish Camino would follow suit...
