Battlestar to conclude after season 4; interim “movie” coming

June 27, 2007

Despite the agony of waiting nearly 10 months between seasons, there’s good news for fans of what is perhaps the most fascinating and dramatic show ever to grace the small screen. From a press conference about the upcoming season 4:

The brain trust behind Sci Fi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica on Friday announced plans to wrap up the critically acclaimed cult series after its upcoming fourth season.

“This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and, finally, an end,” executive producers Ronald Moore and David Eick said in a statement.

“Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end, and we’ve decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there: We’re going out with a bang.”

This fall, to soften the blow of having to wait until January of 08 for new episodes, there is going to be a direct to TV release movie which is to encompass the events surrounding Battlestar Pegusus several months prior to the Battlestar finding Galactica.

Once again, as I always do, I urge anyone who has not watched the show to rent the DVDs and give it a chance. Start with the miniseries, and then get a few episodes into season 1 and see if you can quit. ;)

  • Matt speaks truth. I was firmly against BSG a while back, having absolutely hated the new incarnations of Star Trek, Stargate and other space “drama” shows. I decided before I made fun of it anymore, I’d sit down and actually watch a few episodes. Start with the miniseries, as he said, it’s instrumental to setting up the storyline. I was hooked about 3 or 4 episodes into the first season and watched who knows how many in a row.

  • I, too, used to make fun of BSG quite considerably before I had ever even seen an episode. Matt, on the other hand, had never watched “24.” So we decided that one night he would watch an episode of 24 and I would watch the first part of the miniseries. The next day at work we both realized that one episode wasn’t enough.

I quickly watched the whole miniseries plus two episodes of Season 1. If I remember right, Matt watched four episodes of Season 1 of 24.

This show really is one of the best shows ever to be on television. Don’t knock it just because it is on Sci Fi or because you don’t like Star Trek/gate. Give it a chance, and you too, will most likely have the same conclusions about the show.

BTW, what is to come of the show “Caprica?” I’m looking forward to this TV release movie.

  • Indeed, the major difference being that “24″ has sucked recently. BSG is still awesome. And while “24″ was always entertaining, Battlestar has always had infinitely better writing.

No word on “Caprica”. I believe it’s still in concept development. Moore hasn’t mentioned if it’s a sure-fire go or not. Last I heard, Sci-Fi had not picked up the show.
