The addiction of Warcraft
October 18, 2006
I stumbled across an excellent blog post written by a former World of Warcraft council member on one of the oldest guilds in the game. I’m sure most of you have at least heard about this game, but may not understand how addicting — and destructive — it can become for people who devote themselves to it fully. A must read if you know anyone who plays WoW too much or if you’re interested in understanding the psychology and sociology of the game.

On a personal note, I completely agree. I’ve taken time off the game many times because real life demands it but I’ve seen a lot of people who can’t. I’ve heard stories of people who were kicked out of college with 1 semester left before graduation because they couldn’t seperate reality from what is essentially, and will always be “some stupid game”. It’s the people who can’t keep that in mind that have issues.
rogersmj.com: Warcraft player threatens suicide in response to ban November 26th, 2006 at 8:09 pm
[...] When I first heard of this, my first thought was “How sad — yet another totally addicted player.” But then I read the emails, and as it turns out Blizzard only banned this guy from the online game for 72 hours. After failing to bribe the online customer service agents for $3000 to reinstate his account, the player then threatened suicide. Check out Blizzard’s response (which I think is pretty sad that they have more or less a “canned” response to someone threatening personal injury) and see what happens after that…pretty hilarious! See the forum thread here (or here if that first link doesn’t work). Published by Matthew on November 26 at 8:09 pm in Tech, Funny [...]
