Lost city dates to 9500 years ago

October 11, 2006

An incredible new discovery off the coast of India has revealed a huge ancient city which carbon dating has placed at 9,500 years old — obliterating the prior “record holder” for most advanced and organized ancient civilization by 5,000 years. The city, discovered in 120 feet of water in the Gulf of Cambay, is 5 miles wide and 2 across, and has yielded pottery, tools, and human remains.

The discovery of such an ancient organized society is effectively rewriting history books as we speak. The city is forcing scientists to rethink the entire chronology of human cultural evolution.

It is believed the city was consumed by the water when glaciers melted at the end of the last major ice age, about 9,000 years ago.

BBC Asia has more on the discovery.

  • damnit, Atlantis is supposed to be in the Pegasus galaxy, NOT off the coast of India :(

  • A few interesting points about this article:
I emailed a former anthropology professor of mine about this and he pointed out some things I think we’ve all missed or didn’t know to begin with. The date on the article is quite old, surprising that something supposedly so monumental hasn’t been on the news. Also, the man they interviewed to get a professional viewpoint is NOT a practicing archaeologist and often has some theories that are … revolutionary at best, often absurd. Still, you can’t argue with carbon dating so who knows what may come of this.
