Tornado action

June 25, 2006

Earlier today the tornado sirens went off after a not-too-impressive thunderstorm. They were only on for about three minutes and I couldn’t find any warnings issued by the NWS at the time. However, we came to find out (thanks to our resident weather expert Kim) that there was a tornado on the ground for 35 minutes only 7 or 8 miles southeast of my apartment. It was only an F0, but it looks cool! Why the sirens only went off for three minutes, and why there wasn’t a warning when they did go off, is beyond me. Kevin and I stayed in the apartment totally unaware of anything.

I believe this is at least the fifth tornado in my lifetime that has touched down less than 10 miles from where I live. And I don’t go looking for them like some people do *cough*Kim*cough.

  • I’m still crying. Ahoo ahoo ahooooooooo.

Sirens are only sounded for a few minutes. They signal that you’re supposed to get inside and turn on the tv/radio for further information, because a tornado warning has been issued. And there was one for you guys from the report of the touchdown (cause it sure as hell wasn’t rotating strongly enough to be seen on radar) for about an hour. If you would turned on the tv, perhaps you woulda known ;)

Another weather lesson for today… this one in safety!
