Star Trek XI
April 21, 2006
It’s official — they’re actually making an eleventh Star Trek film. This time it’s going to be Kirk and Spock, the younger days at Starfleet Academy. The film is going to be directed, co-written, and produced by J.J. Abrams, the talented creator of Lost and Alias and director of Mission: Impossible III. I have to admit I’m not very excited about this, although Paramount seems to be; they’re billing it as a tentpole for 2008, meaning it will be a high-profile film designed to help “lift up” other films made by the studio. Frankly, the premise doesn’t sound that exciting to me. Young Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy? What is the plot going to be, exactly? Tribbles invade a frat party? This movie could be really bad or really…just ok. That’s about all I expect. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
