HD versus DVD
February 26, 2006
Although there are a myriad of aspects about digital content that confuses most people, I think one of the most prevalent misconceptions is that a DVD movie is HD — High Definition. It is not. DVD is, indeed, much higher quality than VHS or regular cable television, but it is not HD. High definition content is of much higher quality than a regular DVD. To help you see the amazing difference, someone setup a site with screen captures from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in both DVD and HD. Roll over the images to see the HD counterpart, and be amazed (my favorite is shot 6!). You can click on any of the images to see a much larger DVD version, and then click on that one to see the larger HD version.
